History of the Presidency

      Professor Wang was graduated from the Department of Medicine of Kaohsiung Medical College in 1966, and fulfilled military service of Reserve Officer by acting as a resident doctor at the Surgical Department of Mackay Hospital for two years. After that, he went to the United States to further his studies. He received medical training at the University of Virginia, and acquired a teaching post there. In 1992 he was employed as the first Asian Lillian T. Pratt Professor in North America, and took the post of the Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery Department. In 2000 he was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award in Teaching by the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the University of Virginia.

     During his stay in the United States for over 3 decades, President Wang worked hard on studying blood circulation in bone, bone necrosis and bone healing, and made remarkable contributions to these areas. He was successively conferred 3 most honorable awards by American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, namely Stinchfield Award (1986), Otto Aufranc Award (1992 and 1997) and Nicholas Andry Award (1998), which was an outstanding contribution award in osteology. In 1993 he was selected as the 2nd distinguished alumnus of Kaohsiung Medical College.

     In the summer of 2000 President Wang was invited by the Board of Directors of Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU) to return to his alma mater to act as the 2nd President of KMU after being renamed. He unveiled the KMU tablet imprinted with these words, “Integrate the new and the old, and lead KMU by outstanding leaders,” revealing the core values of KMU for sustainable development. It is hoped that KMU will become a prospective, farsighted, high-quality, efficient and modernized medical university with academic performance and medical care both advancing continuously.
