Southern Kaohsiung's Medical Service Provider

In 1998, Kaohsiung Medical University organized an outstanding medical team from the university hospital to assume control of Kaohsiung Municipal Hsiaokang Hospital. By doing this, we provide residents of southern Kaohsiung with medical services on a par with those offered by a medical center. Hsiaokang Hospital is Taiwan's first privatization hospital managed as a medical center. Hsiaokang Hospital has passed regional teaching hospital Accreditation three times in a row. The hospital relies on its superb staff, up-to-date equipment, and patient-oriented approach to provide the finest possible medical care. We are certain that local residents can benefit from medical services fully up to the standard of a medical center. We are also striving to achieve our goal of community health management, integrate neighborhood resources, and play the role of a health manager suited to the community¡¦s characteristics. We seek to provide patients the considerate service of a community hospital combined with the quality of a superior medical center.

Following six years of managing Hsiaokang Hospital, we have been committed to and implemented our three original principles of "service, quality, and effectiveness" as follows:

1. Dedication to Service

Our hospital contains 20 clinical departments and 477 beds. We offer both inpatient and outpatient medical services. We have acquired a wide range of advanced and specialized equipment. In particular, the installation of an image transmission system (PACS) connected with the university hospital has helped us to improve diagnostic accuracy. All of our physicians possess specialist licenses, and 38.6% are qualified instructors. Furthermore, the many specialist physicians of the university hospital are ready to support Hsiaokang Hospital at any time. After offering community diagnosis, we have also made various types of outpatient services available to meet residents' different needs. These include health presentations to better educate the community about health concepts, providing comprehensive care to members of underprivileged groups, and cooperating with the Bureau of Social Affairs to establish our "Sunflower Shelter Stores" and daycare centers. We also rely on mobile services to take health services to "Home for the disabled", children's welfare centers, and early care centers.

2. Dedication to Quality

Our hospital has 11 medical quality-related committees responsible for organizing and overseeing hospital-wide quality activities. We have joined the Medical Promotion Association's Taiwan medical care Quality Indicator Project (TQIP) and the Medical Management Association's Taiwan Health Care Quality Indicator Series (THIS). We use national and international quality indicators to monitor treatment quality throughout the hospital, and stay abreast of quality management trends among our peers and hospitals overseas.

3. Dedication to Effectiveness

We are committed to achieving the goal of full computerization, and hope to use computer networks to reach a high level of competitiveness. We now process patient registrations, prescriptions, test reports, and imaging systems via computerized procedures. We look forward to providing patients the finest quality treatment by means of the most up-to-date information and most effective processes.

Located close to an international airport, Hsiaokang Hospital has had to cope with the possible arrival of disease-carrying passengers from northern Taiwan or overseas as occurred during the SARS outbreak of May 2003. We responded to this situation by promptly instituting safeguard measures at Hsiaokang International Airport in conjunction with the government and health authorities. We successfully blocked the spread of the disease, and our control measures won widespread praise and recognition.

Today, we are building on our patient-oriented service approach by adding more beds and equipment, and continuing to introduce new medical services and upgrade existing ones. For instance, we have drawn on the resources of Kaohsiung Medical University to establish a cardiac catheterization room and organize a dedicated and specialized medical team. In addition, we have installed the newest MRI equipment, which has eased the longstanding problem of having to refer patients to other medical centers. We will continue to strive for further progress on the basis of our past community health management efforts, and make our community services more complete and ubiquitous.
