Center Objective
The Goal of this center is to promote the healthy and
happy life through harmonious relations between the sexes.
Background
Recent Global economic, social and cultural developments
increasing have drawn attention to questions of gender
and gender relations, and gender studies have become one
of the fastest growing areas of international research
in academic. In 1985, the Population Studies Center at
Taiwan National University set up a Women's Research Program,
being the first such center to set its primary interest
in gender and women's issues. Subsequently, in 1989, a
Research Program on Gender and Society was establishd
by the Graduate Program of Sociology and Anthropology
at National Tsing Hua University. Both of these programs
are dedicated to further researching in the areas of gender
and women's issues.
In southern Taiwan, the situation for those scholars interested
in issues of gender had been difficult due a paucity of
information resources, and consequently there wasa lack
of communication between academic communities. In an attempt
to remedy this state of affairs, Kaohsiung Medical University
has established Gender, the purpose is to research, teach
and offer community services in the areas of gender and
gender relations, the Wender Research Center, as well
as increase academic exchange with international scholars
and institutions.

local scholars and institutions for gender research
and their international counterparts. |

Hosting international academic conferences, colloquia
and seminars. |

Publishing a gender research newsletter, and related
papers and materials. |
Other Services
1. Gender programs and courses for colleges and communities.
2. Gender related informational resources for the public
of southern Taiwan.
3. Acquisition of books, journals and data concerning
gender studies in Taiwan and abroad.
Organization
The Center presently has a director and an executive secretary,
both of whom are responsible for the planning and implementation
of all activities. Members of the Administrative and Consulting
Committee will, according to the expertise of its members,
provide related information, resources and services. The
Center also has a team, dedicated to research, community
services, administrative affairs and the collection of
data, etc.
